EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
